「弱みにつけこむ」のは、「take advantage of」

今日の教えて　：　利用するとか、自分にとって有利 (advantage) になるようにするのが、「弱みにつけこむ」こと。だから、「take advantage of」でそういうニュアンスを出せるのじゃ。

Example :
「おぬし、人の弱みにつけこむとは、武士の風上にも置けぬやつじゃのう。」
　　How could you take advantage of the weakness of others? You are far from a real Samurai.
(注)　far from ～　：　～からは程遠い、つまり、～ではないということ

Example :

「今日の教えて」　：　「～という事実に変わりはない」と言いたければ、「the fact remains that ～」 直訳は、「that以下の事実はそのまま存在している。」

Exmaple :
「お前がどう思おうと、オレがお前の実の父であることに変わりはない。」
　　The fact remains that I am your father, whatever you think of me.

今日の教えて　：　「don't have to be ～ to know 」の直接の意味は、「～を知るのに～である必要はない」という意味だけど、これを使えば、「そんなことぐらい、～でなくても分かる」という感じをだせるんだよ。

Example :

　　You don't have to be a gourmet to know of the restaurant.

「暇をつぶす」には、「kill time」

今日の「教えて」　：　「暇をつぶす」は、英語では「kill time」と、言うのじゃよ。

Example :
飛行機の時間まであと１時間あったので、マイクは空港内のスタバで時間をつぶした。
　　Mike killed time at the airport Starbucks 'cause he had an hour till his flight.

暇つぶしにパチンコやったら、千円で２万円儲けちゃった。
　　I played pachinko to kill time. I spent \1,000 and got \20,000.

ナオコは退屈しのぎにビリーズ・ブートキャンプを始めたが、５分で根を上げた。「Good job!」
　　Naoko started Billy's Boot Camp to kill time, but she gave up just after 5 minutes. "Good job!"

今日の「教えて」　：　「～すべきだったのに」と後悔するなら、「should have + 過去分詞」

Example :
おっ雨だ、傘もってくるべきだったなあ。
　　Oops, it started raining. I should have brought my umbrella.

あんな詐欺師みたいなやつの言うこと真に受けるんじゃなかったのに。
　　He is a born lier. You shouldn't have believed what he said.

「うんざり」は、「be tired of」

今日の教えて　：　「うんざり」したら、「be tire of」か、「be sick and tire of」
