「お互い」は、「each other」

今日の教えて　：　「each other」は、「お互い」という意味で、名詞相当語句である。「お互いに」という副詞句ではない。従って、「お互いに競い合う」は、compete each otherではなく、compete with each otherとなる。competeは自動詞。

Example :
「二人は相思相愛、プロポーズの日も近い。」
　　They love each other. He will soon ask her to marry him.

「二人はお互い見つめ合い、しばらく無言のままだった」
　　The two looked at each other and kept silent for a while.

「どうやら犯人と被害者は出会い系サイトで知り合ったばかリのようだね。」

「たとえ～でも」は、「even」

今日の教えて　：　名詞の前に「even」をつけて、その名詞を強調する事ができる。「Even a child」なら「子供でさえ」

「たとえ怪盗ルパンでも、私のハートは盗めやしない。」
　　Even Arsene Lupin cannot steal my heart.

「たとえ親方といえども、弟子の頭をビール瓶で殴るなんて事は言語道断。」

「思わせぶり」な「suggestive」

今日の教えて　：　「suggestive」は、動詞「suggest =提案する、示唆する、暗示する」の形容詞形で、「暗示的な」、「思わせぶりな」、「挑発的な」ってな意味になるざます。

Example :
「そういえば、政界引退を暗示するかのような記者会見だった。」
　　Come to think of it, it was the press conference suggestive of his retirement from politics.

「どれほどの男性が、彼女の思わせぶりな態度にだまされたことか.」
　　How many gentlemen have been fooled by her sexually suggestive attitude?

「サヨナラを連想させるような言葉は要らないから、俺が後ろを向いているうちに黙って出て行ってくれ。」
　　I need no words suggestive of goodbye. Leave without saying anything while I'm standing with my back to you.

「昨晩は、巨人の優勝を暗示するかのような大事な１勝だった。」

「する羽目になる」、「するのが落ちだ」は、「end up + 動名詞」

今日の教えて　：　、「end up doing」とは、「最終的に～することで終わる」ということなので、「結局～する羽目になる」や、「～するのが落ちだ」と言いたい時に使えるだろう。

Example :
「浮気ばれて、離婚する羽目になってしもた。」
　　I was caught dating a young woman and ended up getting divorced.

「くだらない仕事のせいで、5時ピタどころか残業する羽目になっちまったよ。」
　　I was supposed to go home at 5 sharp. In fact, I ended up working late because of the stupid job.
　　（注） be supposed to ～することになっている

「あの二人、口喧嘩がたえないね。いずれ別れる羽目になるだろうよ。」
　　The two always argue with each other. They will end up breaking up soon.

「今は強がってるけど、2－3日もしたら、詫びを入れるのが落ちだな。」
　　He is trying to act strong, but he will end up saying sorry in a couple days.

「見せびらかす」は、「show off」

今日の教えて　：　「show」は、ご存知のように「（ごく普通に）示す、見せる」ですが、offという強意語を伴って、「見せびらかす」という意味になります。

Example :
「リサは新しい彼氏を見せびらかしたいだけよ。どうせすぐに飽きるに決まってる。」
　　Lisa only wants to show off her new boy friend. It's only a matter of time before she gets tired of him.
　　(注) a matter of time 時間の問題

「あいつプレスリーのサイン入りＴシャツを見せびらかしてたけど、背中に穴があいてたよ。」
　　He showed off his T-shirt with the autograph of Presley, but he didn't notice a hole on the back.

「日本びいきのボブは、日本語で「日本」と書かれた刺青をみせびらかしていたが、「日木」になっていた。」
　　Bob who loves Japan showed off his Japanese tattoo meaning "Japan". Actually, however, the second letter was not "hon"(book) but "ki"(tree).

「日本びいきのボブは、今度は、日本語の「入口」というステッカーを貼ったドアを自慢したが、「人口になっていた。」
　　Next, Bob who is into Japan showed off his door with a sticker written "Entrance" in Japanese, but this time the first letter was not "hairu" (enter) but "hito" (man).

「身にもなってよ」は、「in someone's shoes」

今日の教えて　：　「in someone's shoes 誰かの靴をはく」は、「誰かの立場になってみる」ということ。

Example :
「わたしの身にもなってよ。2時間待ってたんだからね。」
　　Be in my shoes. I had been waiting for you for 2 hours.

「母親の立場で考えると、子供を大学に行かせたい気持ちも理解できるでしょ。」
　　Putting yourself in a mother's shoes, you'll be able to understand why she wants her child to go to college.

「じゃ、子供の立場も考えてよ。いつまでも親の言いなりにはならないってこと。」
　　Ok. Just imagin you are in a child's shoes. I mean, they won't forever say yes to everything parents ask them to do.

「～してたまるか」は、「will not」

今日の教えて　：　「will not」は、どうしても～したくないという強い意志をあらわすから、「～してたまるもんか」、「するものか」って感じになるんよ。

Example :
「ちょっと振られたぐらいで、泣いてたまるか」
　　I will not cry just because I got the elbow.

「あんな田舎者に負けてたまるものか」
　　I will not give in to such a country boy.

「陥る」は、「fall into」

今日の教えて　：　「fall into」は、物が落下するかのような急な変化を表すことができるので、「～に陥る」というような意味になるのじゃな。

Example :
「かわいそうに毒りんごを食べた白雪姫は深い眠りに陥ってしまった。」
　　Poor Snow White fell into a deep sleep as soon as she ate a poisoned apple.

「イチローのような一流選手は、スランプに陥った時の対処法を知っている。」
　　Leading players like Ichiro know what to do when they fall into a slump.

「乱気流に巻き込まれた機内の乗客は一瞬パニックに陥ったが、乗務員の落ち着いた対応でやがて冷静さを取戻した。」

「の割りに」は、「for」

今日の教えて　：　「for」には、「～の割りに」、「～にしては」といった比較、割合を示す用法があるんやけど、知ってる？

Example :
「年の割りに、ませてるなあ（幼稚だ）」
　　He is mature (immature) for his age.
　　(注) mature　発音は「マチュア」で、意味は「熟している」
　　(語源) 実が熟するまで、待つわ(マチュア）と言ったからとか？

「彼女、体重の割りに、気やせするタイプだね。でもそんなの関係ない。」
　　She looks slim for her weight.　But, I don't care.

「ガキのくせに生意気なやつだ。ひとつこらしめてやるか。」
　　He is too smart for just a kid. He needs to be taught a lesson.

「気配がない」は、「no sign」

今日の教えて　：　「sign」って単語はみんな良く知ってるよね。でも以外と使いこなせていないと思う。Exampleにあるように、「気配」、「そぶり」、「様子」、「兆候」、「雰囲気」、どれもsignひとつでOK。チョー便利！

Example :
「もう半年ジムに通ってるけど、一向にやせる気配がないのよ。」
　　I've gone to the gym for 6 months, but I see no sign of losing weight.

「えっ、もう三十路なの？まったく結婚のそぶりもないけど。」
　　Is she over 30? She shows no sign of marriage yet.

「タバコは良くないって耳にタコができるほど言ってるのに、ウチのダンナときたら、一向に止める様子はないの。」

「disappear」で、「姿を消す」

今日の教えて　：　「appear」は、「現れる」で、「disappear」は、その反対の「消える」。では、Exampleで確認してみよう。

Example :
「美しい国は、１年持たずに安倍晋三とともに消え失せた。」
　　"A beautiful country" has disappeared with Sinzo Abe almost within a year.

「NOVA英語講師殺害で全国指名手配中の市橋容疑者は完全に姿をくらましてしまった。」

「無駄に」は、「for nothing」

今日の教えて　：　「for nothing」の直訳は、「何でもないもののために」。で、「無駄に～する」、否定文なら、「だてに～するわけではない」と言うような意味で使える。例を見てみよう。

Example :
「えっ、マルイ今日休み？わざわざここまで来て無駄足じゃん。」
　　What? Is Marui closed today? I came all the way here for nothing.

「競馬で一山当てようと思ったけど、ああ、やっぱり無駄金だったよ。」
　　I wanted to make a fortune on horse racing, but I spent a lot of money for nothing after all.

今日の教えて　：　我々は日ごろ、いろんな助けを借りて生活しているものである。いくつか「thanks to」で言ってみよう。

今日の教えて　：　忠告してあげたにもかかわらず、それを無視してヘマをした相手には、「Didn't I tell you?」が有効じゃ。

Example :
「だから言ったでしょう、昨日が刑事コロンボの最終回だって。ビデオ撮らなかったの？」
　　Didn't I tell you? It was the last episode of Columbo last night. Why didn't you record it on video?

「羞恥心」は、「sense of shame」

今日の教えて　：　「羞恥心」は、「sense of shame」、または「shyness」でもＯＫ。

Example:
「大阪には羞恥心のないおばちゃんが多い。」
　　Many middle-aged women in Osaka have no sense of shame.

「人間は年をとるにつれ、羞恥心が失われていくものである。」
　　The older people get, the more they lose their shyness.

「いい意味で」なら、「in a good sense」

今日の教えて　：　senseには意味という意味がある。（おやじギャグ）　「ある意味において」は、英語では「in a sense」と言う。「いい意味で」なら、「in a good sense」じゃ。

Example :
「阿久悠さんとは、子供の頃からの友人で、いい意味、私の悪友でした。」
　　Mr Aku Yu and I had been friends since we were children. He was, in a good sense, a bad friend of mine.

「柔ちゃんこと谷亮子は、真の意味で、強い母親である。」
　　Ryoko Tani, aka "Yawara-chan", is in a true sense a strong mother.

「give in to」で、「～に屈する」

今日の教えて　：　何かに屈服した時に、「give in to」が使えるぞ。　では、昭和枯れすすきの一節を英語で歌ってみよう。

　　We gave in to poverty. No, gave in to the world. Song by Sakura & Ichiro

「彼は不屈の精神で夢を成し遂げた。」
　　The strong will that will never give in to anything made his dream come true.

「ヨシコは販売員の粘り強さに根負けし、大量の栄養剤を買ってしまった。」
　　Finally, Yoshiko gave in to the salesman's persistence and bought a lot of suppliments.

「brush up」で、「磨き直す」

今日の教えて　：　「brush up]は、「技量などをさらに磨きあげる」ってこと。

Example :
「ドイツ語をやる前に、英語の勉強をやり直すべきでしょう。」
　　You should brush up your English before German.

「課長は部下に馬鹿にされないように、コンピュータの技能に磨きをかけている。」
　　The manager is brushing up his computer skill not to be looked down on by his staff.

「stand out」、「目立つ」

今日の教えて　：　「stand out」は、「目立つ」、「際立つ」ということ。　（覚え方）皆が座っているのに、一人だけ立ち(stand)上がり部屋から出て(out)行けばかなり目立つはず。

Example :
「みのもんたは、テレビによく出ているという点では、抜きん出ている。」
　　Monta Mino stands out in the number of times appearing on TV.

「ほら、真っ赤なドレスで、キムタク似の彼氏と踊ってる彼女、目立つよな。」
　　Look at that gorgeous woman in a red dress dancing with a nice-looking guy like Kimutaku. She really stands out.

今日の教えて　：　「settle for」ってのは、「不満だけど、それでよしとする、我慢する、手を打つ」ってことじゃよ。

「キレる」は、「lose one's temper」

今日の教えて　：　気分、機嫌、気質、気性といった意味の「temper」を使いこなしてみよう。「temperを失くす」で、「キレる」って感じかな。

Example :
