前置詞その２９： 「over」

今日の教えて　：　「over」も副詞、前置詞の両方に使える。「の上に」、「を越えて」と言うような意味じゃ。

Example :

「愛は終りさ、悲しいけれど、終りにしよう、きりがないから。」
　　Love is over. I feel sad, but I'll say good-bye, or it could never end.

「再三再四言ったのに、何でまた道に迷ったの？」
　　I told you over and over again. Why did you get lost again?

「中曽根さんは政治家としての峠は越したとはいえ、まだまだ元気だ。」
　　Yasuhiro Nakasone is over the hill as a politician, but still energetic.

「そうカリカリするな。コーヒーでも飲みながらゆっくり話し合おう。」
　　Don't be so irritated. Why don't we talk with each other over a cup of coffee?

「ここ数ヶ月で、ガソリンは急騰し、とうとうリッター１５０円を越えてしまった。」
　　Over the past months, the price of gas skyrocketted and went over yen 150 per litter at last.

前置詞その２８： 「out of」

今日の教えて　：　「out of」は、元来、「～の外で」と言う意味だが、そこから派生し「～から」、「～の範囲を超えて」、「～がなくて」といった意味にも使われるぞ。

Example :

「千円からになります。はい、２００円のおつりです。」
　　Out of \1,000. Here's your change, \200.

「ここんとこ、太り気味で、階段上がっただけで、すぐぜえぜえいっちゃうのよね。」
　　I'm a little on the fat side these days. Walking up a few steps makes me out of breath.
　　(注) on the fat side (太った側にと言うことで) 太り気味

「でもさあ、もし会社倒産しちゃったら元も子もないんだよ。」
　　But, you know, if your company went out of business, you would lose everything.

「カードはありますが、あいにく現金は持ち合わせていません。」
　　I have a plastic money, but I'm sorry. I'm out of cash now.

「七面倒くさい裁判ではなく、示談にしませんか。」
　　Why don't we settle out of court rather than a troublesome lawsuit?

「あれ、このＦＡＸ、紙切れやん。今すぐ補充せなあかんわ。」
　　Oops, this fax machine is out of paper. I have to make it refiled right now.

前置詞その２７： 「on パート２」

今日の教えて　：　その他、いろいろ「on」の使い方を知っておこう。

「お昼は私がおごるからディナーはあなた持ちね。」　「冗談だろ」
　　"Lunch is on me and dinner's on you, right?" "Give me a break!"

「考え直したんだけど、私たちって相性悪くない？」
　　On second thought, I realized we were just like oil and water.

「新婚旅行の初日財布を落とし、２日目にバスに乗遅れ、３日目には妻が食あたり、ろくなことなかったよ。」
　　On the first day of our honeymoon, I lost my wallet, on the 2nd day we missed the bus and on the 3rd day my wife got food poisoning. We had nothing good.

「仰向けじゃなく、うつ伏せになって下さい。」
　　Lie on your stomach not on you back.

「インターネットであらゆる情報をいながらにして手に入れることができる。」
　　We can get any kind of information on the Internet without getting up from the chair.

前置詞その２７： 「on パート１」

今日の教えて　：　「on」の使い方もいろいろ。onは「接触している」という意味である。
例： on the ceiling 天井に(くっついて）
Don't put your hand on my shoulder 肩に手をおくな。

Example :

「新宿で飲み明かし、日曜日は朝帰りでした。」
　　I drank all night long and got home on the morning of Sunday.

「田中はただいま、別の電話に出ております。」
　　Tanaka is on another line now.

「未成年の息子に成り代わり私が全責任を持たせていただきます。」
　　On behalf of my son who is a minor, I'll take resposibility for it.

「何で、私の誕生日に出張なの？」
　　Why do you have to go on a business trip on my birthday?

「今頃まで一体どこをほっつき歩いてたの？」
　　Where on earth have you been walking up until now?

「会社からの帰り道、セブンイレブンに立ち寄り、ウメッシュを１缶買って帰った。」
　　On my way home from the office, I stopped at Seven-Eleven and bought a can of Umeshu (plum wine).

前置詞その２６： 「off」

今日の教えて　：　「off」は副詞と前置詞として使われるが、意味はすべて、「離れている」ということ。

Example :

「あいつら、くっついたり、離れたり、どうなってんだ？」
　They are on and off. What's going on between the two?

「そんなこと言ったかなあ、言ったとしてもオフレコだよね。」
　　Did I say such a thing? Even so, it's off the record, isn't it?

「ちょっと話が脱線したけど、つまりはそういうことなのよ。」
　　I got a little off the track, but That's what I mean after all.

「台風は、ただいま房総沖をゆっくり北上中です。」
　　The typhoon is slowly moving northward off the coast of Boso.

「上野発の夜行列車降りたときから、青森駅は雪の中。」
　　When I got off the night train departing from Ueno, Aomori Station was covered with snow.

前置詞その２５： 「of パート２」

今日の教えて　：　「of」の使い方はまだまだあるぞ。

Example :

(1) 主格の関係
「母の愛情が痛いほど分かる年になった。」
　　I am so old that I appreciate love of my mother.

(2) 目的格の関係
「母への愛情に変わりはない。」
　　Love of my mother is forever.

(注) 上記(1)の"love of my mother"は「母が愛している」、(2)の"love of my mother"は「母を愛する」意味である。

(3) 同格の関係　(～という）
「でもそんなの関係ねえのフレーズは、今年大流行した。」
　　The phrase of "But, I don't care" became popular this year.

(4) 関連　（～について）
「最近は友人にＥメールで近況を知らせる人が多い。」
　　These days, many people inform their friends of how they're doing lately by e-mail.

(5) その他
「美人アスリートの浅尾美和の自慢は健康美、特に脚線美だそうだ。」
　　It said that a beautiful athlete, Miwa Asao, is proud of her healthy beauty, especially her shapely legs.

前置詞その２５： 「of パート１」

今日の教えて　：　英語の「of」は、日本語の「～の」と同じではない。正しく使えるようになるには、ofが使われている文章をたくさん目にすることだ。

Example :

(1) 所有・所属
「地球の年齢は約46億年と推定されている。」
　　The age of the earth is estimated to be anout 4.6 billion.

(2) 部分
「太陽の黒い部分は黒点と呼ばれている。」
　　Black parts of the sun are called sunspot.

(3) 材料
「水は水素と酸素でできている。」
　　Water is made of oxygen and hydrogen.

(4) (病気などの）原因で
「父は一昨年ガンで死にました。」
　　My father died of cancer 2 years ago.

(5) 分離・剥奪
「きれいな空気はタダではない。」
　　Clean air is not free of charge.
「道楽息子は、一人立ちするどころか銀行強盗を働いた。」
　　The bad son robbed the bank of money instead being independent of his parents.

前置詞その２４： 「near」

今日の教えて　：　「near」は、「近く」を表す前置詞、形容詞として使われる。

Example :

「まだ、終わってはいないが、ほぼ完成に近い。」
　　It's not finished yet, but it's near completion.

「窓辺で雪見酒ですか、風流ですなあ。」
　　It's really nice to dring sake viewing snow near the windowr, isn't it?

「世界的冒険家の植村直己は、1984年アラスカマッキンリーの山頂付近で、忽然と姿を消した。」
　　Naomi Uemura, a world-famous explorer, disappeared near the top of McKinley in Alaska in 1984.

前置詞その２３： 「into」

今日の教えて　：　「into」の使い方いろいろ検証してみよう。

look into　　覗き込む
jump into conclusion　早合点する
burst into tears　ワッと泣き出す
be into　　～に夢中になっている
bump into　偶然ばったり出会う

Example :

「隣に座っている人の新聞を覗き込んだ。」
　　I looked into a newspaper a man sitting next to me is reading.

「早とちりするなよ。まだ、あきらめたわけじゃない。」
　　Don't jump into conclusion. It's not that I gave it up.

「父危篤の電報を受け取るや、泣き崩れてしまったよ。」
　　As soon as I got a telegram, I burst into tears.

　　I am now into making cake, and I gained 2 kilos.

前置詞その２２： 「in」

今日の教えて　：　「in」は、場所（in Tokyo)、時間（in an hour)、着用（in a red dress)、その他慣用句（in addition to)など、応用範囲が広い。

Example :

「大阪で生まれた女やさかい、東京へはようついて行かん。」
　　Since I was a woman who was born in Osaka, I can't go with you to Tokyo.

「課長、朝からご機嫌だけど、何かいいことでもあったのかねえ。」
　　Hey, the manager is in a good mood this morning. Somthing good happened to him, didn't it?

「ミニスカートの女性が前に座ると目のやり場に困るよ。」
　 When a woman in a miniskirt sits in front of you, you don't know where to look.

「公衆の面前で、平然と化粧を直す女性の気が知れない。」
　　I don't understand women who fix their makeup in public without hesitation.

前置詞その２１： 「from」

今日の教えて　：　「from」は、日本語の「～から」と大体同じ。ただし、以下の場合は、「from」を使わないから要注意。
　　会議は3時から始まる　　The meeting starts at 3:00.
　　太陽は東から上がる　　The Sun rises in the east.

Example :

「誰がなんと言おうと、心底惚れちまったよ。」
　　No matter what they say, I fell in love with you from the bottom of my heart.

「好奇心から玉手箱を開けた浦島太郎はおじいさんになったとさ。」
　　As soon as he opened the treasure box from curiosity, Urashima Taro became an old man.

今日の教えて　：　「for」は、以下の例のようにまだまだいろんな使い方がある。

(1) ～に関して
「私としては、彼に行ってもらいたいのだが、彼女がどう言うか？」
　　For my part, I would like him to go, but I'm not sure what she would say.

(2) ～の代わりに
「父史郎に代わり、亀田家長男興毅が記者会見に応じた。」
　　Koki, the eldest son of the Kamedas appeared at a press conference for his father, Shiro.

(3) ～の割りに
「あんた、ほんま、やせの大食いやな。」
　　You really eat a lot for a skinny girl.

(4) ～のために
「息子のためを思ってやったことが結局裏目に出てしまった。」
　　What I did for my son worked negatively after all.

(5) ～なので
「彼女の誕生日に真っ赤なバラのブーケを贈った。」
　　I presented a bouquet of red roses for her birthday.

今日の教えて　：　「for」は、いろんな意味がある。チェックしてみよう。
　　（に向けて)　I started for the unknown world. 未知の世界に旅立った。
　　（の間)　　　　I usually take a bath for 30 minutes. 大体30分は風呂に入る。
　　(賛成)　　　　Are you for or against her marriage? 結婚に賛成なの反対なの？
　　(用の)　　　　A thin manual for beginners 初心者用の薄っぺらな手引書
　　(ために)　　　I prepare a lunch box for him.　彼のために弁当を作る。

Example :

「上野発高崎行き最終列車、まもなく発車します。3番線にお急ぎください。」
　　The last train is going to leave Ueno for Takasaki. Please proceed to Platform 3.

「1時間以上待たされて、診察は5分そこそこだったよ。」
　　I was kept waiting for more than an hour, but it was for 5 minutes or so that I was in the doctor's office.

前置詞その１９： 「except」

今日の教えて　：　「except」は、「～を除いて」。　「except for」は、「～を別にすれば」。

Example :

「10年ぶりの同窓会行ったら、俺以外全員結婚してたよ。」
　　I went to the first class reunion in 10 years, and found every body except me was married.

「ヤツ以外に誰も部屋の鍵を持っていないんだな。よし、ヤツのアリバイを調べろ。」
　　Nobody except him has a key to the room, do they? OK, check his alibi.

「納豆以外の日本料理は全部大好きです。」
　　I love all the Japanese foods except Natto.

「時間にルーズであることを別にすれば、彼は有能なエンジニアです。」
　　He is a capable engineer except for being unpunctual.

「深刻な問題でない限り、解決策を見つけるのはむつかしいことではない。」
　　Except for serous problems, it wouldn't be hard to find out a solution.

前置詞その１８： 「down」

今日の教えて　：　「down」は、前置詞としても副詞としても使える。意味は同じだが、後ろに名詞があれば、前置詞で、なければ副詞だ。

Example :

「この道をまっすぐ行って、３つ目の信号を左折したらATMがあります。すぐ見つかりますよ。」
　　Go straight down this street, turn left at the 3rd light and you'll see an ATM. You can't miss it.

「家丸焼けになってしもたけど、保険金1億円出たし不幸中の幸いやな。」
　　My house burned down but I got \100 million of insurance against fire. I am happy after all.

「落ち着いて、まず火を消して机の下にうずくまるんだ。」
　　Calm down! Turn the gas off and get down under the table.

「雲行きがあやしいぞ。早く下山しよう。」
　　Weather is getting worse. Let's go down the mountain right now.

「森林伐採がこの災害の引き金になったのは間違いない。」
　　Cutting down forests must have been a trigger to this disaster.

今日の教えて　：　今日の前置詞は、「during」じゃ。意味は「～の間に」。

Example :

「留守中に空巣にはいられたのよ。」
　　A thief stole my stuff during my absence.

「婚約中に浮気ってどういうことよ。」
　　How could you go out with another girl during our engagement?

「ええ、女房は今実家に帰ってるんで、鬼の居ぬ間に洗濯ってやつですよ。」
　　Oh, yeah, my wife is now in her parents' house. I am relaxing during her absence.

今日の教えて　：　「despite (=in spite of)」は、「～にもかかわらず」。

Exmaple :

「見かけによらず、タフなやつだろ。」
　　Despite appearance, he is a tough guy, eh?

「年の差にもよらず、二人はよく気が合った。」
　　Despite the difference in age, the couple got along with each other.

「ダイエット中やいうのに、ホンマよう食べるなあ。」
　　You are eating too much despite being on a diet.

今日の教えて　：　byは、「～までに」で、「～まで」は、until だ。間違わないように。
　　　　　Finish it by Monay. （金曜までに仕上ろ。）

前置詞その１５： 「by パート１」

今日の教えて　　：　「by」の使い方はさまざまだ。パート１では、「～に関しては」、「～のそばに」、「by 交通機関 (交通手段を使って)」、「受動態の行為者をあらわすby」などをみてみよう。

Example :

「明日来てくれるかな？」　「いいとも」
　　"Will you come tomorrow?" "Fine by me"

「信州信濃のソバよりも、わたしゃあなたのそばがよい。」
　　I'd rather stay by you than eat soba noodle in Sinshu-Shinano.
　　（英語にするとしゃれになりませんので、悪しからず）

「週末を田舎でのんびり過ごすため、仕事は新幹線通勤だ。」
　　I relax in the country weekends and go to the office by Shinkansen during the week.　

「ところで、彼のしゃべり方からすると紳士だと思うけど、ほんとかな？」
　　By the way, I think he is a gentleman by the way he speaks, but I wonder if it's true.

前置詞その１４： 「but」

今日の教えて　：　「but」は、接続詞だということはみんな知ってるよな。でも前置詞としても使えるんだぞ。その場合は「～を除いて」という意味じゃ。

Example :

「彼女と付合ってんだって？」　「いや、根も葉もないウワサだよ。」
　　"You are seeing her, aren't you?" "Oh, no. It's nothing but a rumor."
　　(注) see someone　～と付合う　　nothing but a rumor ウワサ以外の何ものでもない

「泣いてばかりいる子猫ちゃん。犬のおまわりさん、困ってしまってワンワン。」
　　The lovely kitty does nothing but cry. Doggy Policeman's in big trouble, bowwow bowow.
　　(注) do nothing but　以外何もしない　（このbutは実際は前置詞ではない）

「ただ好きとだけ言って！」
　　Please say nothing but "I love you".

「愛した人はあなただけ、わかっているのに」
　　I loved nobody but you. I know that's true.

今日の教えて　：　「beyond」は、「～を越えて」。

Example :

「引田天洸のショーはマジックの域を超えている。」
　　Tenko Hikita's performance is beyond magic.

　　Tomorrow is waiting for us far beyond the night sky.

「車、ボコボコになってる。」

今日の教えて　：　「between A and B」って、いろんな使い方ができるんや。下の例を見て、みんなも練習してみてや。

Example :

「ここだけの話、どうも奥さんに逃げられたらしいよ。」
　　Okay, just between you and me. His wife left home in anger.

「おやつあんまり食べ過ぎんようにせなあかんで。」
　　Dont' eat too much between meals.

「数秒間、うつらうつらしてたみたいです。気がついたら目の前に信号が,,,」
　　I might be between sleep and wake for a few seconds. I realized a light was just in front of me.

「日本と北朝鮮は実際の距離よりずっと離れている。」
　　Distance between Japan and North Korea is more than real one.

　　It's really difficult to tell you the difference between pornography and freedom of speech.

今日の教えて　：　「between A and B」で、「ＡとＢの（2つの）間に」。2つ以上のものの間の場合はbetween ではなく amongを使う。

Example :

「病院に着いたときは、生死の境い目でした。」
　　When I got to the hospital, he was between life and death.

「松井、左中間に先制ホームランです。」
　　Hideki Matsui hit a homerun between right and center field, scoring the first run.

「食後、10分から20分は風呂に入らないほうがいいよ。」

今日の教えて　：　「beside」は、「～のそばで」、また「besides」は、「～のほかに」

Example :

今日の教えて　：　「at」の最終回は次の通り。
at that time 「当時」
be slow at something 「somethingが遅い」
aim at something 「somethingをねらう」
be surprised at someting 「somethingに驚く」
at work 「仕事中で、勤務中で」
例文で確認せよ。

Example :

「当時、私は山田洋行の専務をしており、守屋元次官と接待ゴルフに興じておりました。申し訳ございません。」
　　At that time, I was executive director at Yamada Corp., and enjoyed playing golf with former administrative vice defense minister Moriya to entertain him. I am very sorry.

今日の教えて　：　「around」は、「～の周囲に」と言う意味と、「およそ=about」という意味があるぞ。

Example :
