数えられる名詞の使い方ーその３

今日の教えて　：　数えられる名詞の使い方その３です。初めての人は、先に前のブログを読んでおいてください。

昨日は、"I like a dog." などと言う人がいたとすれば、その人はかなりの変人だといいました。それでは、不定冠詞 "a" ではなく、定冠詞 "the" なら、どうでしょう？

I like the dog.

これなら、英文法上も、意味的にも、問題ありません。ただし、この犬のことを話し手も聞き手もどの犬のことか分かっているということが条件になります。

もし、いきなり相手に、"I like the dog　（私は、その犬が好きだ）."などというと、相手の人は一体どの犬のことを言っているのだろうと不思議に思ってしまいます。以下のような会話なら問題なしです。

"My mother bought me a dog.."
"Great!"
"No, that's the problem."
"What's the mater?"
"I like the dog, but he doesn't like me."

以下の２つの文章はどちらが正しいでしょう？

\10 coins are more valuable than \10,000 bills

The \10 coins are more valuable than the \10,000 bills.

英文法上は、どちらも正しい文章だが、上の文章は意味的におかしい。なぜなら、数えられる名詞が複数形で使われているので、「一般的に言って、10円玉の方が10,000円札より価値がある。」と言う意味になってしまうからです。

一方、下の文章では、定冠詞 "the" がついているので、10円玉も10,000円札も、特定のものを指していることになります。たとえば、目の前にある数個の10円玉が珍しい記念硬貨で古銭的価値が50万円だとしたら、目の前の新品の1万円札数枚より価値があることになります。

今日の教えて　：　数えられる名詞の使い方その２です。昨日のブログを読んでない人は先に読んでおいてください。

昨日は、"I read book." という文章は成立せず、"book" の前に何か付け加えなければならないといいました。それでは、数えられる名詞の前に何もつけずに、正しい文章にするにはどうすれば、いいのでしょうか？

そうです、名詞を複数形にすればいいのです。

I read books.

これなら、問題ありません。

では、次の文章はどこが変でしょうか？

I like a dog.　（私は、犬が好きだ）

昨日言ったように、"dog"（数えられる名詞）の前に不定冠詞の "a" がついていますし、どこも悪いように見えないという人は、不定冠詞 "a" の意味が分かっていない証拠です。

"a" は、世の中にたくさんあるもののうちのどれか一つという意味です。ですから、"I like a dog." というと、「地球上に無数にいる犬のうちどれか一匹だけ好きだ」と言うことになってしまいます。この人はかなりの変人でしょう。

「犬が好きだ」と言うときの犬は、特定のものではなく、一般的な犬のことです。このように一般論として数えられる名詞を使うときは複数形にします。

I like dogs.　

これなら、OKです。

今日の教えて　：　英文法、長いことご無沙汰しておりました。初級英文法からまた始めましょう。で、今日は数えられる名詞の使い方です。

以前に何回も説明しているように、英語では、数えられる名詞を裸のまま使うことはできません。つまり、

I read book.

といった文章はあり得ません。では、以下の文章のカッコにどんな単語を入れるといいでしょう？

I read (　　) book.

入れられる単語は、以下の5種類が考えられます。他に考え付いた人は教えてください。

（１）　冠詞
　　　　不定冠詞の "a"、定冠詞の "the"
（２）　指示形容詞
　　　　this、that
（３）　人称代名詞所有格
　　　　my、your、his、her、our、their
（４）　特殊な形容詞
　　　any、no、some
（５）　固有名詞の所有格
　　　Yamada's など　　　

また、以下の日本語は英語でどう言うでしょうか？

彼女のこの口紅が連続殺人犯の逮捕の糸口となった。

This lipstick of hers led to an arrest of the serial killer.

(注）　「彼女のこの口紅」 は、"her this lipstick"とは言わない。

「ごみ袋にヒトの頭…」警官出動、実は,

香川県の高松自動車道で21日、ごみ箱に捨てられていたイノシシの死体を、通行人が人間のものと間違いし110番。約40人の警官が出動する騒ぎになった。

警察によると、現場付近を散歩していた男性が、「カラスが白いごみ袋をつっついており、中に人間の死体のようなものが入っている」と通報があった。

現場に駆け付けた署員が袋の中に黒い毛を見つけ、「人間の頭部かも知れない」と連絡。約40人の署員が現場
に出動し周辺を立ち入り禁止にした。

2時間後に鑑識課が袋を開け、体長1メートルほどのイノシシの死骸を発見した。

警察は、「最終的に事件ではなかったが、初歩の段階では、必要以上に注意して捜査を行うことにしている。」と言っている。

包丁２２０本盗んで質入れ、男を現行犯逮捕

警視庁は２０日、会社員の男（５８）を窃盗容疑で現行犯逮捕した。

同庁によると、都内に住む同容疑者は、スーパーで万引きした約２２０本の包丁を計約２２万円で質入れしていたという。

昨年１２月以降、「都内の質店で、包丁を大量に質入れしている男がいる」との情報を得て、昨年１２月以降捜査を行っていた。

警察は、質入れの際に提示する運転免許証をもとに、この男の住所を割り出した。

今年に入って、千葉県や茨城県でも同様の盗難が発生しており、同庁で関連を調べている

A male office worker (58) was caught red-handed for theft by Tokyo Police on the 20th.

The man living in Tokyo told the police he had put in pawnshops about about 220 knives he'd stolen in supermarkets and got about \220,000 for them.

The police had been in search for the man since last December based on the information that a man is bringing a lot of knives in pawnshops.

They got his address from his driver license he used for his identification at the pawnshops.

There are similar thefts in Chiba and Ibaragi early this year, the police is investigating his involvement in these cases

早食い大会で空腹しのぐ…おにぎり窃盗容疑で男逮捕

山形警察は、１６日、住所不定、無職の男（５３）をおにぎり１パックを盗んだとして逮捕。

１５日、男は新庄市で開かれたラーメン早食い大会に出場し空腹を満たしたが、ゆっくり味わって食べたのでほとんどビリだったという。

１４日に大会に出るため電車に乗り、到着時の所持金はたったの数十円であった。

１６日にコンビニで約２００円相当のおにぎり１パックを盗んだところを見つかり逮捕された。

読売新聞によると、新潟県警は１８日、警部補の男（３２）を窃盗と住居侵入未遂で逮捕した。

この警部補は同僚の妻を一方的に好きになり、署内の同僚の机の引き出しから盗んだ鍵で合鍵を作り、この同僚の家に忍び込もうとした。

「彼女のことが好きだった。家庭でどんな生活をしているの知りたかった」と供述している。

同県警は、不祥事を詫び、再発の防止に努めると約束した。

According to Yomiuri Shinbun, Niigata Police arrested an assistant police inspector (32) on 18th for an attempted trespassing and theft.

The policeman fell in love with his coworder's wife onesidedly, and tried to steal in the cowerker's house with a copy of the key he stealed from a drawer of the coworker's desk in the police station

He told the police, "I liked her I wanted to see how her life was at home."..

The police apologized for the scandal and promised to make efforts to prevent similar misdeeds.

産経新聞によると、元オリンピック体操選手の中島（旧姓、岡崎）聡子が2月16日覚せい剤所持で逮捕された。
中島（岡崎）は、常習的な薬物乱用者で、今回が5度目の逮捕である。

彼女は、1976年、高校1年の時に、モントリオール五輪に出場したことがあり、ルーマニアの妖精として当時有名だったコマネチに対し、和製コマネチとして人気があった。またタレントとしてテレビで活躍したこともある。

中国人留学生がキャバクラ４店経営、女子大生をホステスに

栃木県警は１３日、就労資格のない中国人女子留学生（２５と２６）をキャバクラで働かせたとして、中国人大学生の男（２９）を逮捕した。

この中国人の男は、宇都宮大学の院生で2004年に来日し、宇都宮市内でキャバクラを4店経営していた。

売上は2年間で3億円ほどあり、うち約5千万円を中国の両親に送金していた。

「現地でお金をためてもらって、中国でもビジネスをやろうと思っていた」などと供述しているという。

宇都宮大は「事実関係を調べた上で、処分を検討したい」としている。

Tochigi Police arrested a Chinese male student (29) on 13th for letting international female students (25 & 26) from China work at "Kyabakura" (cabret + CLub) without working visa.

The Chinese man, graduate student at Utsunomiya Univ., came to Japan in 2004 and was running 4 "Kyabakura" shops in Utsunomiya. He sold about \300 million for the past 2 years, and sent about \50 million to his parents in China.

He told the police, "I wanted to start business in China with the money I sent."

Utsunomiya Univ. says they will consider what action they should take after checking the matter.

無責任！米の「八つ子出産」…医師と母親に批判強まる

米カリフォルニア州で１月２６日、33才の母親が体外受精で八つ子を産んだが、その問題を巡り、医師と、出産した母親への批判が日に日に高まっている。

アイロン余熱にご用心！冷めにくく、幼児やけど相次ぐ

アイロンは使用中はもちろん、電源を切ってもしばらくは注意が必要だ。

国民生活センターによると、アイロンは200度以上にもなり、やけどをしにくい45度にまで下がるのに40分から100分もかかるそうだ。

小さい子供がまだ熱いうちにアイロンにさわってしまううっかり事故が多発しているという。

同センターでは、アイロンの使用後はすぐに子供の手の届かない所にしまい、このような事故のないようにと注意を呼びかけている。

モンゴルの邦人女性殺害で、ホームレスの男逮捕

モンゴルのウランバートルで日本人女性の日本語教師（３８）が殺害された事件で、モンゴル警察は、ホームレスのモンゴル人の男（２９）を逮捕したと発表した。

「７日未明に首を絞めて殺害した」と犯行を認めており、彼女の口紅を持っていたという。

男は２００４年に東部の都市からウランバートルに移り住んだが、最近は仕事がなく、空き瓶などの廃品回収をしていた。

日本人女性から携帯電話と現金３万ツグリク（約１７００円）を奪ったと供述しているという。

女性の一人旅行は十分気をつけましょう。

Mongolian Police arrested a homeless man (29) for murder of a Japanese woman (38) teaching Japanese who was found dead in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

The Mongolian admitted he had strangled her to death early on 7th, and he had her lipstick.

The man moved to Ulan Bator from an eastern city in 2004. He had no regular work and lived on collected bottles.

He told the police he had robbed her of a cellphone and TG30,000 or \1,700 in cash.

この無職の男は、高級マンションに住み、デートにはリムジンを借りるなど、金持ちを装っていた。、

女性会社員（４１）に、「一級建築士だ」とウソをついて、「結婚して一緒に住みたい」と結婚の約束をした上で、

「ホテル改築の契約をとるのに金が必要だ」と言って、昨年9月に現金570万円をだまし取り、

10月には、160万円を自分の銀行口座に振り込ませたということだ。

警察の発表によると、男はインターネットの結婚サイトを通じて知り合ったという。

詐欺師、ペテン師にはくれぐれも気をつけましょう！

The jobless man lives in an upscale condominimum and rented a limousine on a date to pretend to be a rich man.

The man lied to a female office worker (41), saying "I am a first-class registered architect.", and promised her a marriage, saying "Please marry me. I want to live with you."

And, the man swindled her out of \5,700,000 in cash in September last year, saying "I need money to contract for renovation of a hotel"

He also cheated her into paying \1,600,000 to his bank account in October.

According to the police, the man got to know her through a matchmaking website last May.

踏切で抱合い、男女はねられ死亡

2009年2月11日　-　読売新聞によると、男女が埼玉県入間市の踏切で、抱き合ったまま池袋発飯能行きの準急列車にはねられ死亡した。

警察は、自殺の可能性が高いとみており、身元の確認を急いでいる。

男女とも年齢は３０から４０と見られ、男性はスエット・スーツに黒のダウン・ジャケット、女性はジーンズに白のダウン・ジャケットを着ていた。

運転士は100メートル前方で踏切内にいる男女に気づき、警笛を鳴らし急ブレーキをかけたが間に合わなかった。

男女は抱き合ったまま、逃げようともせず立ちつくし、そのまま電車と衝突した。

Holding each other tightly, a couple was run over and killed by a local express train leaving Ikebukuro bound for Hannoh at crossing in Iruma-shi, Saitama.

Police say they must have committed suicide, looking into their background.

According to the police, both man and woman look 30 to 40. The man was in a sweat suit and black down jacket and the woman was in jeans and white down jacket.

The driver found the couple in the crossing just 100 meters before them, He sounded an alarm and hit the brakes, but it was too late.

Standing without movement, the two embracing each other were hit by the train.

元教え子だった女子大生の写真盗む

2009年2月10日付け読売新聞によると、元塾講師の男（３５）が、住居侵入と窃盗の容疑で2月9日に熊本警察に逮捕された。

男は、熊本の女子大生（１９）の部屋に侵入し、女子学生の中学生時代の写真１枚を盗んだらしい。

この侵入者は、女子学生が中３時に通っていた塾の講師で、女子学生が熊本市内の大学に進学したことを知り、自宅を調べて昨年７月から隣室を借りていた。

塾が休みの日に隣室に来ては、女子学生の部屋に侵入し、部屋の様子を撮影したり、物を盗んだりしていたもので、男のパソコンには、高校時代の女子学生の写真や、尾行記録が保存されていた。

「好意を持っていたが、声を掛けることができなかった」と話しているという。

A former cram school teacher (35) was arrested by Kumamoto Police for trespassing and theft on Feb 9th.

The man allegedly broke into the apartment of a college girl (19) in Kumamoto to steal her picture taken in junior high school.

The intruder was a teacher in the cram school where the girl had been going to when she was 3rd year junior high school student.

He heard she had got in a college in Kumamoto and got her new address, and then rented a room next to her in July last year.

On his days off, the man got back to the room next to her and repeatedly sneaked in her room to take pictures of her room and to steal things.

In his personal computer were pictures of her senior high school age and records of his stalking activities.

He said to the police, "I wanted to make friends with her but I didn't have courage to speak to her."

フェリー、乗ったのに降りない少年どこへ？

和歌山―徳島間を航行中のフェリーで、小、中学生ぐらいの少年がいなくなってから７日で１か月になる。

１月７日午後９時３５分の和歌山港発南海フェリー「フェリーつるぎ」に、少年が１人で乗り込む姿が監視カメラに映っていた。身長１メートル５０～５５、黒いダウンジャケット姿で短髪。

フェリーが約２時間後、徳島港に到着し、乗客から乗船券の半券を回収すると１枚足りず、カメラに下船する少年は映っていなかった。

海上保安部は、巡視船など４隻やヘリコプター２機を出動させ、航路を捜索。

県警も、家出人捜索願を調べたが、該当者はなかった。

南海フェリーや海上保安部、警察は、「少年の行方を心配しており、情報があれば知らせてほしい」としている。

少年についての情報は、同保安部管理課（０７３・４０２・５８５０）まで。

A month has passed since a boy like elementary or highschool student disappeared on the ferry sailing between Wakayama and Tokushima.

Nankai Ferry, "The Tsurugi", left Wakayama at 9:35 pm on January 7th, when the boy was caught gettin on the boat alone by a security camera.

The boy with short hair, 150 to 155 cm tall, wore a black down jacket at that time.

When the ferry arrived at Tokushima about 2 hours later, all the tickets were collected.

Then, they found one ticket short. The boy wasn't caught getting off by a camera.

Marine Safety Agency sent 4 patrol boats and 2 helicopters for search of the boy

Police looked into the missing-person report, but they could get nothing leading to any clue.

Nankai Ferry, Marine Safety Agency and Police are worried about his whereabouts.

Anyone with information is urged to call Marine Safety Agency at 073-402-5850.

１７歳女子高生 出産した乳児を殺した疑い

本宮市の民家で生後間もない男児の遺体が見つかり、この家に住む高校生の少女（１７）が殺人容疑で逮捕された。少女は「私が産み、殺しました」と容疑を認めているという。

警察の調べでは、少女は自宅で男児を出産した直後、頭部を刃物のようなもので刺し、殺害した疑いがある。少女の両親は「妊娠に気付かなかった」と話しているそうだ。

男児の遺体は、少女の部屋のこたつの中から、布に包まれた状態で、家族が見つけた。

A body of a newborn baby boy was found in a house.

Police arrested a high school girl (17) living in the house for murder.

The girl admitted that she had given birth to the baby and killed him.

It seems that she stabbed the boby on the head with a thing like a knife shortly after delivery.

Police said that her family had found the body covered with cloth in the Kotatsu in her room.

年末ジャンボ宝くじ偽造で御用

年末ジャンボ宝くじを偽造し、知人に換金依頼したことがばれて御用となったドジなニュース。

長野県警は３１日、偽造した「年末ジャンボ宝くじ」を換金し、１００万円をだまし取ろうとしたとして、詐欺未遂の疑いで塗装業の男（６５）を逮捕した。

調べでは、容疑者は、外れ券から偽造した「年末ジャンボ宝くじ」を知り合いの男性に手渡し、みずほ銀行松本支店の窓口に持ち込ませ、換金しようとした疑い。

銀行の機械が宝くじをはじいたため偽造が発覚。警察が男性に事情を聴いたところ、容疑者から頼まれ、事情を知らずに銀行に行ったことが分かった。

The man made a fake Nenmatsu Jumbo Lottery using a losing ticket and tried to cheat the bank out of yen 1 million.

He handed the fake lottery ticket to his acquaintance and asked him to go to Mizuho Bank Matsumoto branch to cash it.

An automatic checker found it counterfeited, and he told police that he was just asked by his freiend and that he didn't know at all it was a fake."

「かんぽの宿」 １万円で入手し６千倍で転売

旧日本郵政公社が０７年に一括売却し、東京の不動産会社が１万円で入手した鳥取県の「かんぽの宿」が、直後に６千万円で鳥取市内の社会福祉法人に転売されていたことがわかったというニュース。

この宿泊施設は、宿泊者数が急激に減少し、赤字経営であったため、東京の不動産会社に１万円という評価価格で売却された。

この社会福祉法人は、約１億１千万円の改修費をかけて、老人ホームとしてオープンさせたという。

事務長は「当時は安いと考えていたが、評価額が１万円だったとは知らなかった」と話している。

Former Japan Post sold a Japanese inn called "Kanpo no Yado in Tottori to a real-estate company in Tokyo for only yen 10,000 in 2007.

The accommodation facility was being run in red because of sharp decline in the number of guests

It was discovered recently that the Tokyo-based company had resold it to a social welfare corporation in Tottori for yen 60 million as soon as they got the facility.

The corporation renovated it into a nursing home for eldery people, spending yen 110 million.

The head of the corporation says, "I thought it was cheap at that time, but I didn't know it was only yen 10,000."
